Exciting festive themed activities to try with your kids!

We know that the December holidays can feel long when you need activities to help keep your "Mini-Me" busy.  It has been a long year and trying to rack your brain for some activities to keep the children busy through the December holidays can be exhausting. We have enlisted the help of our friend at Life is a Garden for a few ideas. 
Try these activities to keep the kids busy and get into the festive spirit this December!

 

 Home made Garden Crackers 

Bring the family together and get crafting on some crackers for your Christmas table.

What you will need

  • Empty toilet rolls 
  • Tissue paper (in festive colours)
  • Brown wrapping paper
  • A tie (String, twine or ribbon)
  • Seeds (some good suggestions below)
    • Summer Veg - Capsicum, Tomato, Broccoli, Cucumber, Egg Fruit and Watermelon.
    • Summer Flowers - Marigold, Cosmos, Alyssum, Forget-Me-Not, Nasturtiums, Petunia and Sunflowers.
    • Summer Herbs - Catnip, Chives, Dill, Fennel, Rocket and Sage.
  • Coloured pencils or other decorative goodies.
  • Scissors (and parental guidance)
  • Glue (optional for extra decorative goodies on the crackers)

Set up a place where you can sit down with a table. Spread the tools around the table.

 

 Now to assemble your crackers.

  1. Gently separate your seeds and place into tissue paper, Tie it to ensure no seeds fall loose. Label the paper with the name of seeds.
  2. Cut the brown wrapping paper into strips for easy wrapping around the toilet roll.
  3. For extra fun and festive spirit, decorate the brown paper using the colour pencils, crafts or paint.
  4. Place the seeds wrapped in tissue paper into the empty toilet roll.
  5. Using the tissue paper or brown wrapping paper, wrap the toilet roll, leaving extra paper on either side of the toilet roll. Tie the excess paper with string, twine or ribbon.
  6. Set your Christmas table and be ready to delight your guests with eco friendly and extra special Christmas crackers!

 Lastly, sow your seeds and watch them grow!


A DIY Pot Planter - Christmas Style
Get into the festive spirit with decorating some terracotta pots!

 What you will need:

  • Terracotta pots with drainage holes (one per family member or more)
  • Watercolour paints (festive themed)
  • Paint brushes
  • A glass jar with water to clean the brushes
  • Stencils or pictures for inspiration
  • Potting soil
  • Your chosen plant (suggestions below)
    • Indoor plants - Philodendron, Ficus, Alocasia, Fern.
    • Container plants - Petunia, Gerbera, Begonia, Celosia.

Set up a painting station, place newspaper or a drip sheet on a table. 

  1. Set up the terracotta pots, paint, water jars and paint brushes.
  2. Decorate your pots in festive colours.
  3. Allow the paint to dry fully (allow a day to be sure)
  4. Transplant your chose plant into the pot and water well.
  5. Use the pots to decorate the garden or your Christmas table!
